Google My Ad Center empowers users to take control over the ads they see, limit sensitive ads, and gain a clearer understanding of their personalized ad experiences across Google platforms. The project involved defining the visual direction and developing patented interaction design patterns, optimized specifically for the product within the Google design system. The design aimed to simplify ad personalization, providing users with intuitive controls to easily manage their privacy and ad preferences.

Context

For years, digital ads felt like an opaque black box, leading to user distrust regarding privacy and frustration with irrelevant content. The objective was to shift the paradigm: transforming ads from a passive, intrusive experience into a transparent, user-led service. Our goal was to design an intuitive service that functions seamlessly across the entire Google ecosystem.

Approach

The strategy focused on meeting users where they are by integrating controls directly into ads and creating a clear and aesthetically pleasing curation interface. We moved beyond basic toggles to offer meaningful privacy controls, allowing users to granularly define what data is used for personalization.

Outcome

Announced at Google I/O and launched in 2022, the platform's foundation enabled it to scale to 800+M monthly active users in just two years. Beyond its massive reach, My Ad Center was recognized as the gold standard for transparency, establishing a new industry benchmark for user-controlled data privacy.
